Perfect Stranger, the extraordinary 10-piece band originally conceived in 1974 by visionary composer and bassist Chris Sansom, recently made its long-awaited recording debut with the release of their album Unfinished Business!
Sansom first imagined Perfect Stranger shortly after completing his B.Mus. Influenced by the likes of Yes, Frank Zappa and various jazz-rock-funk artists, along with Bartók, Stravinsky and other 20th century classical composers, Sansom sought to create music that defied conventional jazz and pop formulas. He assembled a group of gifted young musicians, including Chris Biscoe, Dick Pearce, Paul Nieman and the late, legendary pianist Pete Jacobsen, to bring his ambitious compositions to life. Despite the talent involved, the original band never had the opportunity to showcase their work in all its complexity. In the last few years, Sansom has re-created Perfect Stranger with a stellar lineup of musicians! Tonight, you’ll be hearing:

After playing a number of gigs in the last few years, the band released Unfinished Business in October 2024 to mark the project’s 50th anniversary. The albumfeatures a selection of complex and challenging original compositions, rooted in classical composition techniques and jazz. The signature piece of the album, Life & Times (of a Perfect Stranger), is a four-movement work loosely based on the structure of a classical symphony. Another highlight, Ludwig’s Van, is a bold but cheeky reimagining of Beethoven’s Große Fuge, Op. 133, blending shuffle, funk, reggae, and bebop. You will hear all of this tonight, along with other original material and pieces by Charles Mingus and Frank Zappa.
This project has been a long time coming, says Sansom. The music on this album is exactly half a century old at the time of release, and it’s incredibly rewarding to finally bring it to life with such a talented group of musicians.

Sansom po raz pierwszy wyobraził sobie Perfect Stranger krótko po ukończeniu B.Mus. Zainspirowany takimi artystami jak Yes, Frank Zappa i różnymi artystami z kręgu jazz-rock-funk, a także Bartokiem, Strawińskim i innymi klasycznymi kompozytorami XX wieku, Sansom starał się tworzyć muzykę, która przeczyłaby konwencjonalnym formułom jazzu i popu. Zebrał grupę utalentowanych młodych muzyków, w tym Chrisa Biscoe, Dicka Pearce'a, Paula Niemana i nieżyjącego już legendarnego pianistę Pete'a Jacobsena, aby tchnąć życie w jego ambitne kompozycje.
