Casper Hoedemaekers with Rob Brockway: “Heim” – album launch (1st set)
Juliet Wood Quintet (2nd set)
Independent record label Elsden Music is rapidly making a name for itself through the excellent quality of its studio recordings. Tonight, founder Greg Dowling showcases the label’s latest album release:
Casper Hoedemaekers with Rob Brockway – “Heim”:
Casper Hoedemaekers – double bass
Rob Brockway - piano
Bassist Casper Hoedemaekers’ debut album Heim is an intimate duo of double bass and piano, an inviting, after-hours meditation on the idea of home. In the five original compositions, there are themes of European identity, lockdown, displacement running through the five original compositions on this album. They show a tangle with tradition, drawing on jazz in its European and American vernacular. The minimal instrumentation of the music allows the rich sonority of the double bass to sound through, revealing the delicate counterpoint of its melodic lines with Rob Brockway’s piano. In the second set, the duo will be joined by
Allison Neale - saxophone
Billy Pod – drums
Juliet Wood – vocals
After her album showcase earlier in the year, Juliet is delighted to be back at Jazz Café POSK. This time, expect a few songs from her debut album Sconsolato, alongside other melodies that started life as instrumental charts for larger ensembles and big bands. This self-confessed ‘musical magpie’ presents a collection of tunes connected by shimmering harmonies, eloquently described by beautiful melodic lines. Each song holds a particular magic and is brushed with colours from Juliet’s distinct vocal palette - ranging from dark and smoky to pure and crystalline.
“Difficult to know where to begin with this outstanding debut album from Juliet Wood: brilliantly arranged songs that are flawlessly delivered… this is the best vocal album I have heard this year.” - Nick Lea, Jazz Views
"A love letter to the art of song" - Jon Vernon, Jazz Notes
